AKT Activation

AKT, also known as protein kinase B, is a serine/threonine protein kinase that functions as a major downstream effector of PI3K signaling.

AKT exists in several isoforms, including:

  • AKT1
  • AKT2
  • AKT3

Although these isoforms share structural similarities, they can have distinct biological functions depending on the tissue and cellular context.

Following recruitment to the plasma membrane, AKT undergoes phosphorylation at regulatory sites that contribute to its activation. Once activated, AKT can move through cellular compartments and phosphorylate numerous downstream proteins.
