Signal Amplification and Integration

Cells rarely receive only one signal at a time.

Instead, multiple pathways can operate simultaneously and interact with one another. This phenomenon is known as signaling crosstalk.

For example, growth factor signaling may interact with metabolic pathways, stress-response mechanisms, and inflammatory signaling.

Cells therefore need to integrate multiple molecular inputs before generating an appropriate response.

Signal amplification is another important characteristic. A single receptor activation event can lead to the activation of many downstream molecules, allowing cells to respond rapidly even to relatively small signals.
