A Key Regulator of Cell Survival and Growth

One of the major functions of PI3K–AKT signaling is the regulation of cell survival. Once activated, AKT can influence several proteins involved in apoptotic processes, helping cells maintain survival when appropriate growth or environmental signals are present.

At the same time, PI3K–AKT signaling contributes to the regulation of cellular growth. One of its most important connections is with the mTOR signaling network, which coordinates protein synthesis, nutrient availability, energy status, and biosynthetic activity.

Through AKT–mTOR interactions, extracellular signals can therefore influence whether a cell enters a state of increased biosynthesis and growth. This relationship is particularly important for understanding how cells balance nutrient availability with their energetic and structural requirements.
