A Central Pathway Connecting Cellular Signals, Growth, Survival, and Metabolism

Cells constantly receive signals from their surrounding environment. Growth factors, hormones, nutrients, and other extracellular molecules can trigger complex intracellular responses that allow cells to adapt their activity, maintain their integrity, and coordinate processes such as growth, metabolism, proliferation, and survival. Among the signaling networks involved in these responses, the PI3K–AKT pathway is one of the most important and extensively studied.

PI3K–AKT signaling provides a molecular connection between signals received at the cell surface and functional changes occurring inside the cell. Rather than acting as a simple linear pathway, it functions as an interconnected signaling network that communicates with multiple regulatory systems, including mTOR, FOXO, AMPK, apoptotic pathways, and metabolic signaling.
