The Major Components of a Signaling Pathway

Although signaling pathways can be highly complex, many contain several fundamental components.

1. Signaling Molecules

Signaling molecules transmit information between cells or within a cell. Some signals act locally, while others can travel over long distances.

Examples include insulin, epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factor beta, and various cytokines.
